HANA VU AT THE PARTY
Last year, Los Angeles artist-producer Hana Vu released her ear-catching debut EP, How Many Times Have You Driven By, which was followed by a period of anxiety as to whether this initial success could ever be repeated. With this in mind, Vu considered the celebrity of actresses Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway who have broken through in their industry and now appear to be irremovable features. As the now 19-year-old musician states, “These actresses were like, inspiration, slash aspiration, slash delusion.” Her fractured idealization of the entertainment industry is the cornerstone of her forthcoming double EP project, which is kicking off with a mildly left-of-centre synth number ‘At The Party’. Led by Vu’s distinctive drawl, a basement-club beat pulsates through this bouncing single which explores “spite and how truly meaningless it is.” Although the infectious disco rhythms will encourage all kinds of carefree dad-dancing, Hana Vu’s performance in the Peter Ferris Rosati-directed video is predominantly still, with pan expression and questioning glances. The visuals reflect the dynamism of this artist: cynic versus optimist; rationalist versus dreamer. - Hannah Thacker Photo Credit: Sham Scott
